Orondo, Wash. - The Mike Utley Foundation announced today that the 2010 DAM2DAM “Thumbs Up!” bike tour scheduled for September 25 is canceled. A memo received from Mike Utley Foundation directors stated, “although the bike tour has remained financially stable and a successful fundraiser, the current economic down turn could affect the number of sponsors and riders participating. The Board will revisit the possibility of a 2011 bike tour in the event that the economy improves.”

Seattle, Wash. - Construction began this past weekend adjacent to the Burke Gilman Trail at the intersection of Seventh Avenue NE and NE 40th Street. The project will improve the pedestrian and bicycle crossing at this location by removing the existing island and installing a new curb configuration and new access to the Burke Gilman Trail.

Portland, Ore. - Northwest Trail Alliance has been alerted by Portland Parks & Recreation staff about a recent case of unauthorized trail building and illegal riding in the North Management Unit of Forest Park - the area located north of Germantown Road. This is a very serious matter, as this area has the highest habitat values in the entire park, and is actively used by elk and other wildlife.
The new Sandy Ridge Trail System opened this past fall on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) administered land east of Sandy, near Brightwood, Ore. When completed, this BLM recreation project will provide over 15 miles of newly built singletrack trails - all of it open to cyclists. To date, approximately five miles of trail are complete and ready to ride. Designed and built with assistance from the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA), the system offers a variety of trail features - including bermed corners and jumps - that will challenge and appeal to riders of various skill levels and riding styles. They'll have speakers and clinics about cycling as well as factory reps here to answer any and all questions and show off some of the newest gear in cycling. There will also be opportunity for special onetime deals and informational clinics about shoe fitting, training, bicycle maintenance and more. It was exactly one year ago today when cyclist Kevin Black of Seattle, Wash., was killed in an accident near a busy intersection while commuting to work. He was traveling south on 24th Ave. NW in Ballard when the driver of a white van pulled away from the curb to his right, apparently making a U-turn.
