Superior Glass Track Classic at Burnaby Velodrome a Huge Success

November 12, 2012

Jeremy Storie

The November 9-11 long weekend saw the first large race event at the Burnaby Velodrome for the 2012-13 season. The Superior Glass Track Classic attracted over ninety riders from Alberta, Washington state, Vancouver island, Kamloops, and the lower mainland. There were competitors as young as nine and into their 60’s. Riders competed in nine endurance mass start races and two sprint disciplines over the three days.

The youth men’s races were dominated by the Juventus boys making a sweep of the podium. The Burtnik brothers Evan and Mason taking 1-2 with Lukas Adomonis in third. Some of the most exciting and skilled racing of the weekend came from the seventeen strong youth women’s field. Thirteen year old Maggie Lyster-Coles of Local Ride/Dr Vie Superfoods + dominated the final day to take the overall with Gillian Ellsay of the Comox Valley Cycling Club in second and Stacey Guiffre from Redmond WA in third.

There were forty youth riders taking part in the Superior Glass Track Classic as part of a youth cycling camp led by Jeff Ain ably assisted by Burnaby Velodrome coaches Rachel Canning and Mike Rothengatter. It is very important to note the development being done on many fronts from club coaches on Vancouver island, the interior, the lower mainland, at the Victoria and Burnaby velodromes, and through Jeff Ain’s programs that is leading the way for our future champions.

The omnium race for the C’s was won by Greg Matthews with Murray Shaw of Coastal Cycling in second and Rachel Canning (Local Ride Dr Vie Superfood+) in third. The hotly contested B group was won by dEVo’s Keifer Livingstone over ERTC’s John Wood and Jackson Pickell (dEVo) in third. The A group was dominated by Garneau Evolution’s Kyle Buckosky nearly doubling the points of second place Laura Brown from Local Ride Dr Vie Superfoods+. Eric Johnstone, Team Alberta was third.

The sprint omniums featuring a Saturday sprint tournament and Sunday’s keirin were won by Tony Codova from Mercer Island Wash, and Kyle Buckosky in the B’s and A’s respectively.

Many thanks go out to the volunteer crew and of course title sponsor Superior Glass. Next up will be the Superior Glass 4 Day held between Christmas and New Year. Several big names have already signed on and the event will continue the tradition of world class track racing at Burnaby.
