3,500 to Ride in Portland's Worst Day of the Year Ride

Portland, Ore. - On February 12, 2012, 3,500 bundled-up cyclists will depart from the Lucky Lab, 915 SE Hawthorne, on the 11th annual Worst Day of the Year Ride, an 18-mile odyssey around Portland. The annual bicycle ride features belly-warming drinks on the route and a finish line feast of fresh soups and bread in support of the Community Cycling Center. This rain-or-shine ride has grown from 250 riders the first year (2002).
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Easy, fun, flat routes.
- Belly-warming treats like hot cocoa and chai every four miles
- Finish line meal of scratch-made, local, sustainable soups and fresh bread by Laughing Planet Cafe
- Costume contest with $1,300 in prizes
- An optional 45-mile challenge course to Hillsboro
- It has never rained on the Worst Day of the Year Ride, except for the last mile of the ride in 2007. In fact, the weather has always been warm, sunny and pleasant!
- Ride departs between 9 and 10:30 a.m., depending on the route.
- 75% of riders come in costume!

The 11th Annual Worst Day of the Year Ride is a benefit for the Community Cycling Center, a non-profit organization that broadens access to bicycles. The meandering urban course is very flat and perfect for riders of all skill levels. This quirky, colorful sea of cyclists will snake around the city in search of hot drinks and yummy treats.
This popular annual tradition often sells out and riders are encouraged to register early.
ABOUT THE WORST DAY OF THE YEAR
The Worst Day of the Year is schedule to fall around the time of Oregon's worst weather ever recorded. In 1933, a lowest of -56 degrees temperature was recorded in Ukiah. The Great Flood of 1996 was at this time of year; the Willamette River rose over 10 feet and there was a record 28 inches of rain over four days.
