January 15 — USA Cycling sent a group of twelve to Beijing for the third round of the UCI Track World Cup. Bobby Lea (Mertztown, Pa./Pure Energy Cycling-ProAirHFA) posted the best performance for the U.S. contingent with seventh-place overall in the men’s omnium.
“Bobby's goal was to earn valuable points toward Olympic Qualifying in the Omnium,” explained USA Cycling’s Director of Endurance Programs Benjamin Sharp. “The goal was met.”
Lea rode three personal best times in the timed events and also had good points and scratch races. On Friday, he placed second in the flying lap, tenth in the points race, and 15th in the elimination. Saturday saw him race to seventh in the individual pursuit, tenth in the scratch race, and 11th in the kilometer time trial before accumulating a total of 55 points for seventh place overall.
Friday saw lots of team action with Zack Noonan (Kutztown, Pa./FCS-Metro Volkswagon), Matthew Lipscomb (Decatur, Ga./Fulton Flyers), Ian Moir (Long Beach, Calif./Yahoo Cycling Team), and Adam Leibovitz (Indianapolis, Ind.) combining forces to place 13th in the men’s team pursuit.
