Call for Applications for Denver Mayor's Bicycle Advisory Committee (MBAC)

Want to help Denver become the most bicycle friendly city in the country?

November 17, 2011

Sent to Bicycle Paper from Denver Bike Sharing

Denver, Colo. - Denver is looking for committed individuals who will represent their diverse community to serve on the Mayor's Bicycle Advisory Committee starting in February, 2012. They are transforming the way we move through our city is occurring - from almost exclusive reliance on single occupancy cars to an active, environmentally friendly multi-modal transportation culture combining walking, biking and/or transit.

According to the recently released 2010 American Community Survey, 2.2% of Denver commuters bicycled to work, an increase from 1.8% in 2009. Since 2005, the percentage of bicycle commuting in Denver has increased by 57.1%, and since 2000 it has increased by 131.6%. Denver ranks 6th in bicycle commuting out of 43 cities with a 2010 U.S. Census population of more than 400,000. This change is having a positive impact on our community's health, environment, quality of life and economy. Once relegated to the realm of recreation, bicycles are now regarded as a tool to achieve sustainability. Correspondingly, serious attention is being paid to bike policy, investments in bike infrastructure and public education. As advisor to the Mayor and City agencies and conduit back to the community, the MBAC is on the front line of this transformation.

A cover letter, resume and a completely filled out application form are required.

- How often do you ride a bike(e.g. daily, weekly, monthly) and for what purpose (e.g. transportation, recreation, health)?

- What if any bicycle organizations are you a member of?

- Do you use public transportation? Combine it with bike trips?

- Will you be able to make the time commitment of at least 5 hours per month to 1) attend monthly evening MBAC meetings; 2) attend periodic working committee meetings in between full meetings; 3) volunteer for "homework" as needed?

- Rank your interest in the following committees: policy, infrastructure and education.

In your cover letter, please answer the following questions:

In addition, please highlight the skills you will bring to the work of the MBAC and what you hope to accomplish during your term of service.

Reply with your letter of interest , application and resume to Anthony Aragon at Anthony.Aragon@denvergov.org by December 15. You will hear back by January 15.
