2012 Whiskey Off-Road Pro Registration Now Open
November 1, 2011
Tucson, Ariz. - Registration begins today for the pro category of the 2012 Whiskey Off-Road endurance mountain bike event in Prescott, Ariz. The online registration form and cash purse information can be found here.
Registration opened at 9 a.m. Mountain Standard Time (MST) on Tuesday, Nov. 1. Event organizer, Epic Rides, expects the pro category to fill up quickly; it is limited to the first 150 entrants and boasts a $30,000 cash purse, the world’s largest one day cash purse in mountain biking. Equally rare, the cash purse will be split evenly between male and female competitors.
Winners confirmed to return and defend titles include Chris Sheppard (male, of Team Rocky Mountain) and Pua Mata (female, of Team Sho-Air). More than 50% of last year’s competitors have already expressed interest in returning for 2012. Other top pros planning to compete on race day include:
Kelli Emmett - returning 3rd place female (Giant Bicycles)
Gretchen Reeves - returning 4th place female (Tokyo Joes)
Rebecca Rusch - returning 5th place female (Specialized Bicycles/Red Bull)
Colin Cares - returning 2nd place male (Kenda-Felt)
Jay Henry - returning 3rd place male (Tokyo Joes)
Carl Decker - returning 4th place male (Giant Bicycles)
Bryan Alders - returning 5th place male (Epic Pro Cycling)
Epic Rides anticipates 1,750 riders (1,600 amateurs/150 professionals) participating in three solid days of racing, riding and celebrating all things mountain biking in historic Prescott, Ariz.
Todd Sadow, president of Epic Rides, is optimistic for The Whiskey, in historic Prescott, Arizona, to become a destination for top European talent. “There are no UCI World Cup events within two weeks of The Whiskey Off-Road. Between time available and the sizable cash purse, it presents a likely travel scenario as our event fits into the world calendar,” he said.
The 2012 Whiskey Off-Road will take place Friday, April 27 through Sunday, April 30. The weekend will kick off with a pro level fat tire Criterium, a well appointed industry vendor and tech expo, and beginner level “15 proof” fun ride on Friday (one proof = 1 mile.) Saturday will present a complete day of amateur riding in the 25 and 50 proof distances complimented by live music on the courthouse lawn and a full schedule of family-friendly events and activities centrally located in downtown Prescott. The showdown for the cash purse begins Sunday morning. The pro and amateur 50 milers will ride the same course. All events will be based in the center of downtown Prescott on Whiskey Row, which receives an estimated 10,000 visitors each weekend day during tourism season.
Pro registrants will need to attach a race resume to their registration form in order to gain entry into the 2012 Whiskey-Off Road. When completing the online registration form, it will prompt the applicant when appropriate to attach their resume.
Amateur registration opens Sunday afternoon, Jan. 1. The amateur category will be limited to 1,600 participants.
