Sisters is Open for Business; Despite Rooster Rock Fire
August 5, 2010
Sisters, Oregon - The Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce wants to assure people that Sisters is open for business despite the Rooster Rock Fire currently burning south of town. Skies are blue and businesses are open. The streets of Sisters are full of visitors and locals spending their summer vacation here in Sisters.
"We appreciate all of the things the fire crews are doing to help suppress the Rooster Rock Fire around Sisters," says Erin Borla, executive director of the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce. "There is just a little haze in town. Business are still open, visitors are invited to join us for the Bead Stampede this weekend in Barclay Park, as well as some great shopping, dining and recreation opportunities throughout Sisters Country."
John Keenan with Bronco Billy's Ranch Grill and Saloon in downtown Sisters said, "Be sure to let everyone know the commercial side of Sisters has not been affected or endangered by the Rooster Rock Fire. It seems as though smoke is dissipating, and I expect everything to be back to normal in 2-3 days."
The Central Oregon Incident Management Team, under joint authority from the Deschutes National Forest and the Oregon Department of Forestry, assumed command of the Rooster Rock Fire yesterday. The 5,500 acre blaze is reported at 30% containment. At this time there is reported to be only a small "special area closure" on Forest Service Road 16 and a portion of the surrounding area. Forest Service Road 16, also known as Three Creeks Road, is on the south side of Sisters, the temporary closure begins approximately 5-6 miles outside of the downtown core.
"We have jazz musician Jody Henderson playing here Friday night from 7-9 and I'm not cancelling anything," Nadean Murray, owner of wine shop Cork Cellars joked yesterday. "I don't smell any smoke here (in downtown Sisters) people should definitely come to town!" John Leavitt, owner of Leavitt's Western Wear right in the center of downtown Sisters echoed those comments; "there's not that much smoke here - there's no reason for people to stay away from Sisters - it's beautiful!"
"People here know what their doing when it comes to forest fires," said Lisa Clausen, owner of the Sisters Movie House. "The fire crews have responded quickly, they are getting the fire under control; life is normal in Sisters."
