New road race course, farmers market and beer garden this year.
July 27, 2010
Salida, Colo. – The 6th Annual Salida Omnium, hosted by South Central Racing/Amicas Cycling Club, will be held July 30-August 1, 2010, in Salida, Colorado. The Salida Omnium has become known as one of the best competitive cycling events in Colorado attracting over 500 elite and amateur Senior, Masters, Juniors and Paralympic athletes from the region. The Salida Omnium has seen Olympic and World Champions including Tyler Phinney, Jeanne Longo, and Alison Dunlap. The Salida Omnium begins with a Friday night time trail, a Saturday figure-eight criterium in historic downtown Salida and finishes with a Sunday Road Race.
The Salida Omnium begins Friday evening with an eight-mile Time Trial course, that has an elevation gain of about 250 feet, but it is a bit harder that it seems and riders should “prepare to suffer.”
On Saturday, a figure-eight criterium in historic downtown Salida will make for a challenging course for racers and a very exciting event for spectators to watch. The course is about one mile in length and has a fast, slightly downhill finish. During the criterium, award-winning Amica’s Pizza and Microbrewery is sponsoring a beer garden in Alpine Park at the best location on the course to watch the race. Also during the criterium in Alpine Park, the popular weekend Farmer’s Market will showcase fresh locally grown produce, arts and crafts, food tents, and more.
On Sunday, the Salida Omnium will feature a new road course. Cyclists will test their legs on each lap of this challenging 5.7-mile circuit, located in the foothills just outside of the Salida city limits. This is a perfect course for athletes to fine tune their legs for the upcoming Masters National Road Race Championships.
The 2010 Salida Omnium is host of the cycling events for the Rocky Mountain State Games (RMSG). The RMSG is a multi-sport festival for Colorado citizens of all ages and athletic abilities including physically disabled, visually impaired and Paralympic athletes. RNSG is a member of the United States Olympic Committee. The Salida Omnium is also part of the Tour of Colorado race series.
Salida has been named on numerous occasions as the “best place” to live, bike, ski, raft, and retire by leading sources, such as The New York Times, Outside Magazine, Better Homes & Gardens Magazine, Sunset Magazine, Men’s Journal, and U.S. News and World Report. Salida has earned its reputation as a top destination for recreation, arts, great weather, and a small town friendly atmosphere. For more information visit www.NowThisIsColorado.com.
