Registration numbers are up for our camp that is happening at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., on August 1-6, 2010. The Northwest camp will have representative riders from Idaho, Nevada, Washington and Northern/Southern California, along with Oregon. The USA Cycling camp is designed for riders aged 14-22 years. We should top off with 25 athletes for this camp. The Northwest camp is one of ten USA Cycling Athlete Development Camps nationwide.
“This year our camp is almost doubled in attendance and we have more youth riders coming from all over the NW region,” says Jim Anderson, camp manager. “We are looking forward to working with some of the great young talented riders that want to improve skills, learn new training techniques and jump to that next level of competitive cycling."
The purpose behind the USACycling Regional Development Camps is multi-faceted. First and foremost it provides a development opportunity for younger riders. Over the course of the six day camp, participants will practice skills that are specific to the camp discipline, enjoy informational discussions about nutrition, bike mechanics, training and take part in standardized field testing that is consistent with all of the endurance-based camps. In 2009 there were 15 riders from around the NW/NorCal taking part in this unique opportunity.
Multiple camps have selected campers for elite junior competitions in the past (e.g. Tour of the Red River Gorge for road, Le Tour de L'Abitibi for road, and Mt. Snow for MTB).
