Twenty-two Athletes Set to Represent the U.S. at Junior Road and Track Worlds

July 20, 2010

Colorado Springs, Colo. (July 19, 2010) – USA Cycling announced today the 22 junior athletes that will represent the United States at the upcoming 2010 UCI Junior Road and Track World Championships in Italy, August 5-15. The United States looks to have its strongest junior cycling representation at the world championships in years with nearly two dozen riders the likes of Lawson Craddock and Coryn Rivera set to make waves.

The road racing portion of the event will kick off this year’s junior world championships with ten 17-18 year-olds representing the United States in the road race and time trial events scheduled for August 5-8, in Offida, Italy. Reigning junior world time trial silver medalist Lawson Craddock (Houston, Texas/Hot Tubes) will headline the squad of six American men after automatically qualifying to contest both the road and time trial with wins at Trofeo Karlsberg, Tour du Pays Vaud and the USA Cycling Junior Road National Championships. Eamon Lucas (Pacific Grove, Calif./Specialized) will also contest the time trial as a coaches’ selection after finishing fourth in the race against the clock at the Ster Vlaamse Ardennen and second in the time trial at the USA Cycling Junior Road National Championships. Craddock and Lucas will be joined in the road race by four additional discretionary nominees who’ve each displayed success on the road in 2010: Ryan Eastman (Petaluma, Calif./All Sport-Team Swift), Anders Newbury (Fairfield, Vt./Hot Tubes), Nathaniel Geoffrion (Petaluma, Calif./All Sport-Team Swift) and Paul Lynch (Colchester, Conn./CL Noonan-Bay Hill Capital-Corner Cycle).

The most decorated junior cyclist in American history, Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif./Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY 12) will lead a strong contingent of four junior women including Jessica Prinner (South Elgin, Ill./ABD Cycle Club), Kendall Ryan (Ventura, Calif./VRC-NOW-MS Society) and Kaitlin Antonneau (Racine, Wis./Team Kenda). Rivera, the only automatic nominee as national champion, and Prinner are set to challenge the race against the clock while the entire foursome will team up for the road race.

As the only crossover athletes named to this year’s junior world championships squad, Craddock and Rivera will head to Montichiari, Italy, to contest the track portion of the event, August 11-15. As the national champion, Craddock will ride the men’s individual pursuit. Rivera, after meeting time standards, will contest the women’s points race and will enter the multi-event omnium as a coaches’ selection.

Twelve riders will join the legendary pair on the track, including Matthew Baranowski (Perkasie, Pa./Team Alliance Environmental) who is the only male rider to meet automatic time standards. Baranowski will contest the scratch race, sprint, team sprint and keirin events.

As national champions in their respective events each of the track riders competing at the UCI Junior Track World Championships earned automatic nomination to the U.S. squad.
