March 1, 2010
Orondo, Wash. - The Mike Utley Foundation announced today that the 2010 DAM2DAM “Thumbs Up!” bike tour scheduled for September 25 is canceled. A memo received from Mike Utley Foundation directors stated, “although the bike tour has remained financially stable and a successful fundraiser, the current economic down turn could affect the number of sponsors and riders participating. The Board will revisit the possibility of a 2011 bike tour in the event that the economy improves.”
The DAM2DAM “Thumbs Up!” Bike Tour was created in 2003 beginning at Lincoln Rock State Park. Interest in the ride increased each year capping at 1,200 participants in 2007. Recognized as one of the largest recreational rides for handcyclists; riders would travel to Wenatchee, Wash., from other states, including Hawaii, to ride in the DAM2DAM. Utley, a former Detroit Lion and president of the Mike Utley Foundation, said, “We have all been winners on this adventure. Those living with spinal cord injuries, the community and the outstanding contributions from our Sponsors and riders have definitely made a difference. I have valued the opportunity to be involved with this ride and am proud of what has been accomplished.”
