Pedaler Clothing Melds Cycling Performance, Street Style and Sustainability

New clothing line returns a portion of its profits back to community.

February 16, 2010

Brooklyn, N.Y., and LAGUNA BEACH, Calif., – Pedaler Clothing, a new apparel line blending trend-forward fashion, street cycling functionality, sustainability and responsibility is launching in select cycling shops now. The Pedaler line consists of unisex, eco-friendly bamboo T-shirts and hoodies, shorts, pants, a jacket and “Pony Express” messenger bag all manufactured in the U.S., and designed and developed by street cyclists Trinity Kerr and Virginia Elwood, also a prominent NYC tattoo artist. The founders are donating one percent of the brand’s net profits to cycling organizations around the nation.

“We’ve created apparel technical enough to endure a cycling commute, yet fashionable enough to be considered street wear,” says Kerr, a native of Laguna Beach, Calif. “Cyclists don’t want to wear performance clothing to work or play because it lacks style, so they’re altering their street clothes to be more comfortable or adding reflective elements to improve visibility. Pedaler Clothing fills their needs.”

Elwood, a Brooklyn, NY resident, says, “We recognize that commuter cycling is part of a growing movement in small and large cities around the world and we hope to sustain it by promoting cycling in the mainstream as an alternative means of transportation that is sustainable, healthy and practical.”

Pedaler Clothing launched with a full apparel line ranging from T-shirts to Bags. The T’s and hoodies are designed for on-bike comfort achieved by lengthening the overall garment, sleeves and torso. Pedaler also adds a jersey pocket to their T’s, hoodies and jacket, as well as tasteful reflective elements for better riding visibility. The T’s can be considered a natural alternative to a jersey.

Functional fitted shorts and pants are constructed of U.S.-made sustainable stretch denim and twill, sewn with a seamless crotch for riding comfort and reflective elements.

A new spin on the traditional cycling windbreaker, the Pedaler windbreaker anorak jacket stores a hideaway hood and is embellished with brass buttons and reflective elements.

The “Pony Express” handmade messenger bag is modeled after the iconic bag of the late 1800s, constructed of imported English waxed tartan, lined with organic U.S. duck canvas and trimmed with sustainable U.S. cowhide. The “Pony Express” messenger is garnished with heavy duty hardware and features an anti-twist strap for stability while cycling. Waterproof and reinforced for strength, Pedaler’s “Pony Express” bag elevates the popular bike messenger bag to a new level of fashion and function.

Bamboo Materials

Wherever possible, Pedaler’s line is constructed of sustainable bamboo, a natural fiber with a cashmere handle and 200% more wicking than cotton. Bamboo is naturally anti-microbial and therefore anti-stink, and body temperature regulating, which keeps Pedalers cool in the summer or warm in the winter.

Many fabrics that claim to be anti-microbial have had chemical treatments, but bamboo fiber-based fabrics contain an agent called bamboo kuhn, which naturally prevents bacteria from cultivating. Natural Bamboo has become one of the world’s most prolific and fastest-growing plants, able to reach maturity in about four years compared to the 25 - 70 years for the typical commercial tree species in the U.S., and kuhn also means the plant can be grown without fertilizers or pesticides, making bamboo fabric one of the most sustainable textiles on the planet.

Pedaler Clothing’s signature store is Laguna Cyclery in Laguna Beach, Calif. Mellow Johnny’s in Austin, Texas, Ride Brooklyn in Brooklyn, N.Y., LA Brakeless in Los Angeles, Calif., Cambridge Bicycles in Cambridge, Mass., Bicycle Revolutions in Philadelphia, Pa., and Carytown Bicycle Company in Richmond, Va., will also be carrying Pedaler Clothing.
