Capitol Velo Announces Launching of Juniors Cycling Team

Capitol Velo is proud to announce the launch of its Juniors Cycling Team. The team is open to boys and girls 10-16 years old and is based in Salem, Oregon. Salem native and professional cyclist Omer Kem will bring his years of experience and training expertise to the program as Director Sportif (coach). The goal of the Juniors Team is to provide younger riders an introduction to the sport in a fun environment and the formal training needed to become successful racers.
Key Details:
· Mandatory informational sessions are set for January 21 at 6 p.m. and January 30 at 4 p.m. will be held at the Beanery Coffee Shop (located at 220 Liberty St. NE, Salem, OR 97301). Interested riders (and their parents) will get a chance to meet the Director Sportif and learn more about the team.
· The season will run from February to August and includes ten races. Racers are free to race additional events. The season will culminate in the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association State Championships held in August.
· During the season, an organized practice will be held each week. These practice sessions focus on fundamental skills, basic strategies and training progress. Starting in late March / early April, the Juniors Team will have access to additional training rides lead by Capitol Velo team members.We are currently planning on Thursday afternoons, but it will be up for discussion with the riders and parents.
· Riders on the Capitol Velo Junior Cycling Team receive:
- A training program tailored to their developmental needs
- Support at each of the targeted races (from help with registration and pinning numbers to pre-race talks and equipment checks)
- One cycling kit (uniform)
- Paid race fees and OBRA membership
- Full benefits of Capitol Velo team membership
· Participation will be capped at ten riders for the first year in order to ensure that each receives the training and mentoring they need to achieve their personal goals.
· Participation costs $150 for the season and can be paid monthly or in full. Scholarships are available. Riders who are interested in joining the team but are in need of bikes or other equipment are encouraged to contact the team.
