Seattle Bicycle Expo - A Success

By Claire Bonin

On March 12th more than 200 vendors and exhibitors set up their booths at the Smith Cove Cruise Terminal at Pier 91, the site of the 2010 Seattle Bicycle Expo. The new facility offered a welcoming change from the previous years’ venues, and exhibitors and attendees alike were pleased with Cascade Bicycle Club’s efforts to provide a respectable home to the show.

Over the two-day weekend affair, more than 9,300 people visited the expo, many spending part of both days on-site to discover all the exhibits and listen to the various speakers. Although parking could have been an issue, Cascade organized shuttle buses to mitigate the long walk from the parking area to the terminal, and attendees who drove to the event seemed please with the initiative. Those who rode were greeted with front row bike parking, which was packed.

The event ran smoothly and the crowd was in a happy, lazy mood, taking time to stop by and chat with the various vendors. The uncontested hit of this year’s event were the performances of German artistic cycling World Champion, Corrina Hein, and the duo of Stefan Musu and Lukas Matla. They were met with a “sellout” crowd each time they took to the floor. The classic bike show was again a highlight of the event and a section not to be missed.

Best of Show - Hub and Bespoke.

Continuing in the tradition established at the Bike Expo, Bicycle Paper presented the Best of Show, Class Act and People’s Choice Awards.

Hub and Bespoke was the unanimous choice for the Best of Show Award. The stylish booth design — from its old fashion lamppost and iron fence, to the armoire and display, combined with the garments worn by the owners — was charming an unmatched by any other vendors. Their fashionable and functional clothing and accessories, both elegant and commuter friendly, were well displayed. Juliette Delfs and Aldan Schank deserve the accolades for their beautiful booth design. Visit their boutique in Fremont (513 N 36th St., opening in April) or on the web at hubandbespoke.com

The Class Act Award was presented to the Mount Baker Bicycle Club. Designed by Charlie Heggem, owner of Norka Recreation and organizer of the Ride 542, among others, the booth featured previous years’ posters and the drawings that inspired them. The open space design made for easy interaction with the various event representatives and information on Bellingham’s Chuckanut Century, the Tour of Whatcom and the Ride 542 was readily available.

The People’s Choice Award changed hands this year and visitors selected the Bicycle Alliance of Washington as their preferred booth. Following the “Sowing Seeds Statewide” theme, the BAW volunteers were handing out small packets of Pacific Northwest wildflower seeds to Expo attendees and providing information on the Alliance’s advocacy work. The booths had been redesigned for the occasion and attendees noticed.
